Helping the Refugees!

Ms. Margherita plays a critical role as the volunteer coordinator for refugee lunches in Ankara, Turkey. In fact she delivers food to the refugees almost every day of the year! Can you imagine?

Two friends of mine, Miranda and Tacy, and my sister, Sydney, and I (Olivia) went to Ms. Margherita’s house to assist her in making sandwiches for 150 refugees. It took us about an hour to make the sandwiches after which I interviewed Ms. Margherita about the important work she is doing in the community.

Me: “What is it like being a part of such a wonderful cause and how did the whole idea of sandwich-making for the refugees start?”

Ms. Margherita: “Well I didn’t actually start the effort - about 10 years ago there was a women named Bridget Guerrero, she and her friend, Carolyn Ennis, were running and talking about how they could help the refugees when Bridget said they should just start to make sandwiches every day. They decided they would make the sandwiches and deliver them to the refugees at the government building who were waiting hours to be interviewed to receive refugee status.”

Me: “How did you get this job if she began it?”

Ms. Margherita: “Well I’m not completely sure how I got this job.” We giggled! “When Bridget left I was left with this job!”

After we made the sandwiches we walked to the refugee facility where we handed out the sandwiches we made and some juice. When we gave the refugees the food the look on their face was priceless and something I will always remember.

AND THAT IS HOW MS. MARGHERITA HELPS REFUGEES!
